My favourite thing to do upon arrival in any new place is to spend some time at the local food markets. It is one of the best ways to get acquainted with the variety of flavours, smells and specialty ingredients, common to the local cuisine. It is also a great place to become knowledgeable about the personality of the locals, as food markets are often where the locals are themselves, going about their daily business, bargaining for the best deals and chatting with their friends, butchers, fish-mongers, cheese-mongers, bakers and local farmers.
Below you will find a list of my favourite markets, as well as a list of the markets that are currently on my "must-see" list. Hopefully, some of these will be checked off of the list soon! If you have any suggestions for fantastic markets that I have neglected to mention, please leave me a comment so I can add them to my list.
